The Wedding Quilt

20 May

On the subject of completing goals, I’ve conquered another one!

I said I’d like to finish my wedding quilt, preferably by July but definitely by the end of the year. Well I’ve already done it!

My Nan cut out about 100 6″ squares and then we left them on tables with fabric pens, glitter glue and pearl pens for people to sign. I knew for a fact that a guestbook would get buried away somewhere and rarely looked at but I can’t sit on the sofa without a quilt and so this gets used all the time.

Sewing the squares together was a lot more painful than it should have been.

1) My Nan didn’t cut the squares all exactly the same size!

2) People wrote write to the edge of the fabric…

Both of these things meant that some messages had to be chopped off a bit and there are a few places where all 4 corners don’t meet exactly.

After I’d done that I thought it’d be a really fab idea to have a decorative quilting pattern and an even better idea to quilt it all BY HAND.

This is why it’s taken me 10 months to finish the darn thing! That’s a King Size (5ft wide) bed it’s on- I worked out it took me about 100 hours to quilt it all and when I was near the end I wondered whether actually it would’ve been better to just tie it. As it goes I like it, especially now I can see the whole thing at once in the photo and it provides a nice pattern on what would otherwise have been a very boring back.

Not that I’ll forget our anniversary (one would hope!) but I embroidered the date in the centre

We got some really lovely messages:

To some weird drawings

(I think this is us, naked. Drawn by Mark’s Grandad…)

I’m not entirely sure what this is

(Somebody said it’s a rat- I think that’s the best interpretation so far. Any further guesses?)

To this:

Yeah, we got married on Mark’s brother’s 18th birthday. We’re such pricks.

Me-Made-May week 2

17 May

It’s definitely getting harder now. I want to wear my polka dot dress all the time and if I wasn’t doing MMM I definitely would. This is good though because it’s pushing me to pull out things I wouldn’t usually wear.

I did fail a little on photos this week- I forgot to take 3 of them!

Saturday 10/5/14: Aurora Dress

We went to see Jimmy Carr that night and I thought it would be so awesome to get a photo of me in my handmade clothing with Jimmy to post on the blog. Unfortunately it was quite late and he announced he wasn’t going to do any photos 😦

Monday 12/5/14

Kind of difficult to see what I’m actually wearing!

Cardigan: Peacocks

Shirt: New Look

Skirt: The ‘failed’ pencil skirt

Actually, I’m glad I wore this. I’ve lost a little bit of weight, all of which has come off my bum and hips and I think it’s helped me like this skirt more. Now I’m on the lookout for a nice black textured fabric to make a black version!

Tuesday 13/5/14:

Dress: Minnie Mouse Dress

Cardigan: Probably Primark, could be New Look. I have more black cardigans than a normal person should! (And yet I can never find one to wear!!)

Belt: Came with a dress. I think it was possibly a Tesco one.

Wednesday 14/5/14:

Er, sorry for the lollipop and the mess! We had a sweet buffet at our wedding and we’re still making our way through the lollipops!

Cardigan: Primark

Belt: Probably also Primark

Dress: Rushed Rat

Thursday 15/5/14

I forgot to take a photo… Again I wore the Aurora Dress.  I know I just talked about not wearing the same thing twice…. The way I see it, I didn’t see anybody I know on Saturday so why not wear it again on a Thursday?! I did change it up though and also wore my Agatha with it.

Friday 16/5/14

Another non-photo day! I wore my Simple Daisy dress, provisionally with my Hiro cardigan but the weather has been Be-A-utiful so it was off for most of the day and now I’ve left it at work 😦

Saturday 17/5/14 Today!

Cardigan: Miette (unblogged)

Dress: Saltspring (still unblogged!)

I know I wore this dress last week but 2 things. 1- it is HOT and I really need to create some more summery outfits. 2. I wore a different cardigan and honestly I think this looks like a completely different outfit compared to last week’s version:

Not a bad week but I really need to get my butt into gear and finish some things I’ve started otherwise we’re going to be on repeat for the rest of the month!

How have you found week 2?

Chuck will no longer be chucked.

16 May

Remember in my goals post that one of my goals was to sort out Chuck? I’ve bloomin done it! 1 goal down, 12 to go!

According to my Ravelry notes I started this in February last year. 😳 I actually knit up the body pretty quickly but you know fo sho those sleeves sat there unfinished.

I finally faced my demons and battled through the sleeves (which were only half length anyway!) until I ran out of yarn 😦

All I had left to do was the ribbing on the left sleeve and I ran out of yarn. How bloody ridiculous is that? So it sat for another few months. Then I finally bought some more yarn but apparently there are 10485739 different shades of cream and it looked horrible.  I’m sure most people probably wouldn’t have noticed. My elbows are pretty normal so people don’t generally look round that area but I knew I’d be staring at it all day.

So it sat another few months. The only solution I came up with (because buying more yarn and reknitting is definitely NOT a solution) was to dye it. But even though the yarn was 80% wool, that 20% acrylic could’ve thrown the whole thing off.

I looked at buying polyester dye, but that would only dye the acrylic part and not the wool, which is the majority of the jumper. What about a combination of normal dye and poly dye? Too expensive- we’re talking nearly £15 here and there’s no guarantee it will even work.

I tried boiling it with food colouring following a video on youtube but all that did was ruin my kitchen floor (srsly, my kitchen floor is now a lovely shade of navy) until eventually I went out to Dunelm, picked up some Dylon and shoved it in the machine before I could even think about it. I wasn’t wearing it how it was anyway so whatever happened it couldn’t be worse than its current state.

Tip: definitely do things on a whim.

I love it! I love that the 1 strand of acrylic yarn hasn’t taken so it gives a heathered effect. I love that it’s not a bright, in your face navy but a subtle, washed out look. I also love that there’s no colour difference in the left sleeve ribbing!!!

Unfortunately I don’t actually have anything to wear it with in this colour- I chucked it over what I was already wearing for these photos but I look like Andy Bernard- so preppy!

After coming out of the dye wash it was scratchy of scratchville. I literally got jumper burns down my arms just from putting the thing on. But I’ve shoved it in the wash with a shit ton of fabric softener

and it’s still scratchy of scratchville. But after he’s taken some Berocca so I can deal.

Hollywood Sewalong- part 3

13 May

I’m extremely sorry I didn’t manage to post for the actual reveal date- I did think death was upon me.

I know I should have been more organised but read through the whole post and then you’ll see why this didn’t happen!

So, if we recap, my original plan was going to be based on the purple dress

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 10.23.03

I went for Butterick B5030, a wrap dress and I chose a purple silk-backed crepe to make it from.

Worst. Decision. Ever.

Which one? All of them.

This whole thing has been a headache from start to finish. Really I should’ve scrapped the plan ages ago instead of pushing on through. If I’m honest, I would definitely have chucked this in the bin if I didn’t have the sew along to make me persevere.

Why was it such a ball ache?

I cut the largest size which should have been big enough to cover my boobs. The skirt should have been more than big enough but a little extra coverage wouldn’t have mattered so I didn’t do any grading.

The largest size did not fit and neither did the skirt. Seeing as my waist is 32″ and it was designed for 34″ and commercial patterns usually give plenty of ease I don’t know what the fuck happened there. I could get it round my waist, sure, but the result was something akin to Iggy Azalea

Not exactly the look I was going for.

I redrafted the bodice with an FBA, cut this out of the skirt pieces from the first draft and ordered more fabric for a new skirt.

Cut out the whole thing again

and the bodice was too big.

The skirt actually was fine so out of my remaining scraps I cut out the bodice again just slightly bigger than the original pattern.

Then I had a huge gape at the front.

I decided that was acceptable at this stage and I could add another closure to take out some of the gape so I carried on.

Stitched the skirt to the bodice, fine and then lost the sleeves.

I had very, very, little fabric left and didn’t want to waste another penny on this piece of shit. I cut some sleeves out of old bodice variations (good job I don’t empty my bin often!!) and sewed them in.

So far, it was looking like this might shape up to be ok after all.

Then I came to hemming it. That was a bloody nightmare. The bottom of the skirt is bigger than the bit above it so I had to gather the skirt up to hem it. That’s kind of fine I guess, not ideal but I’ve done it in a couple of other skirts, except I had to gather this one so much you can see it through the other side and it looks awful. In addition to that, even though I measure from the waistline all the way round, the front edges hang slightly lower than the rest so you can see the underlay through the bottom.

Hemming the sleeves also incurred the same problem.

At this point I want to burn it.

I took pictures because I feel like you deserve to see this monstrosity but it’s not finished- 1 sleeve is unfinished, there’s no neck facing, I didn’t bother adding closures (pinned for photos) and the hem looks like crap but here we go:

FYI, that’s a forced smile. I hate this dress. So much. I might give it to the rats as bedding.

Luckily, the other participants have made some lovely things, and they posted on time, so go check them out!

Me-Made-May week 1.5

9 May

I didn’t die!!!

I’m so, so, so sorry that I didn’t post my Hollywood Sewalong reveal post on Monday- I honestly thought the reaper was coming for me and I’m pretty sure you guys wouldn’t want to see photos of me with tissue bunged up my nose and snot dripping down my face

A post is on its way, pending decent weather, but for now here’s MMM week 1.5

Saturday 3/5/14

On Sunday I pretty much wallowed in my own pit of misery. Monday wasn’t much better but I did manage to do some sewing which you’ll get a glimpse of in the next two pictures!

Wednesday 7/5/14

Cardigan: Agatha v2.0

Dress: New! Not blogged about yet.

Belt: Primark

Thursday 8/5/14

Dress: New! Also needs blogging about

Blazer: New Look from yolks ago

Scarf: Next

Friday 9/5/14

Cardigan: Primark

Dress: Simple Daisy Dress

Overall, not as successful as I was perhaps hoping- my plans were mostly thwarted by germs. But every day that I actually wore clothes I managed to wear me-made so that’s something!

I think what’s apparent here is that the photos are terrible! I need to find an indoor photo space somewhere instead of standing on the bed (which is probably how it broke, whoops!)

I also definitely need to make a blazer- no more New Look for me!

How’s your Me-Made-May going?

5 May

I’m writing a very quick post from my deathbed to apologise for not posting the big reveal for the Hollywood Sewalong today.
I’m typing this on a very low-lit iPhone screen because my head is pounding.
I promise I’ll post by the end if the week- if I manage to survive!
