Owl never make this again.

16 Mar

Have you ever been really excited by making something, eager to finish it and then show it off to everyone only to be let down by the fact it looks absolutely terrible?

Guys, this happened to me and I kind of want to cry as well as drop-kick the offending item into oblivion.

Kate Davies’ Owls jumper is cropping up all over the inter webs. According to my Ravelry Notes I started this in April 2013 but you know how it goes with me and second sleeves so I put it away for a while. Seeing everyone else’s made me pick it back up and I powered on through to get it finished.

Except it looks awful. Look:

I think I just have too much boobage to pull something like this off. All of the attention is drawn there because of the yoke detail but the detail is kind of distorted by the boobs. Ignoring the stupid wind face here, look how much worse it looks from the side:

I’m also really pissed at the sleeves. You guys know I hate knitting them so I decided to make these 3/4 length. Only you wouldn’t know that! I put them on to measure them as I went and stopped when they reached my armpit, just as the pattern says, and yet when I’ve got it on now the sleeves sit longer than that, and yet not a full-length sleeve so now they’re a stupid weird length.

And then there’s the fact that bottom-up construction is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever encountered. It is so difficult to knit the sleeves and body all in one go and also it leaves a hole! A great big gaping hole that you’re supposed to close up afterwards. What is that about?!

Anyway, none of this is the pattern’s fault. The pattern is actually quite straight-forward to follow, this is just down to stupid body shape and poor yarn choice. I can’t quite remember what I used but I think it was Sirdar Hayfield or something and it’s just too stiff and it doesn’t meld together. There are holes around the back and arm shaping which look awful.

The owls look awesome and my friend really likes it. I’m tempted to give it to her but I don’t know if I could give her something I’m not completely happy with.

The best dress ever (well, to date at least)

1 Nov

So after all the meh-ness on this blog of late, I’m pleased to announce that I love, love, love this dress.

I love the fabric so much

Not only do I like the pattern but it drapes beautifully and it’s so soft! It was lovely to work with too.

I found it in the remnants section at C+H half price. There were only 2 remnants left, both a metre long so I bought both which totalled about £13. No way I would’ve paid that if I didn’t love the fabric! The sad thing is C+H have discontinued it and I have no idea who it’s by; there’s literally nothing on the selvedge. 😦

What I’m mega super happy with about this dress is kind of weird. I saw a picture on Pinterest of a girl wearing a red spotty dress with a lovely blue cardigan and it just struck me. Of course I forgot to pin it to show you and to even look at myself. Anyway, I was already making the blue cardigan (which is Hetty of course!) and then stumbled across this fabric- it was like fate!

This is my poor Hetty substitute and me doing some really weird neck thing :S

I used Simplicity 1803, view B this time. It’s a tiny bit low cut. Not terribly indecent but I work in a school, we’re pretty much limited to turtle necks, so this is a no go which is really sad because I want to show it off everywhere! It’s got pockets (on the side, stupid 1803) which make it even greater

Since I love this dress so much I even inserted an invisible zip. I dare you to find it

Alright well I might have covered it with my hair. Unintentionally I promise! But it’s like the second invisible zip I’ve ever done and apart from a minor fluff with the bias tape at the top it’s pretty darn good! I didn’t even mind hemming this one so you know I love it 😀

If anyone knows anything about this fabric; who it’s by, where I can buy it etc please let me know. I’m not necessarily in the market for more of this (although I definitely am) but there must be more in the range that I can buy!

You know fo sho this dress will be photographed again as soon as I finish Hetty 😉

Yellow Swallows Dress

27 Oct

This dress has been in the making for probably about a year. I bought 3 metres of fabric but then used some of it to make something else. I cut the skirt out and 1 piece of the bodice but didn’t have enough left to cut out the back. Then the fabric was out of stock so it sat     and sat      and sat.

I finally found somebody selling it on eBay by the fat quarter for the same price I paid for the metre. I called up the original stockist several times to see if it was coming in because it made me slightly sick to pay that. It was only £3.50 but the principle you know?!

Anyway, here’s the dress

I used McCalls 6503. I originally put the ruffle in the collar but since this is cotton it was just too bulky and bugged the heck out of me rubbing itself all up my neck. No, that had to come out.

The dress then had quite a few changes made. I didn’t really fit it as I was going because I just wanted to get it done which was not a good idea! I ended up taking the zip out, bringing in the side seams, putting the zip back in and taking in the shoulders. Doesn’t sound like much but I did each of these things several times!

As for how happy I am with the dress, I’d say maybe like 5 or 6 out of 10. The collar never lays down properly. I’ve pressed the shit out of that thing but it’s always getting in my face. The other problem is it’s not decent enough to wear, well, pretty much anywhere. Way too much boobage going on so I have to wear a vest top underneath.

(This is me staring at the amount of flesh I have on show!)

I’m also aware that I have yellow skin which the dress blends into so I kind of look like a big pile of vomit. Exactly what I was hoping for.  I do still wear it; I usually add a blue cardigan to try and eliminate as much vomityness as possible.

In an even better turn of events I wore this after I’d been swimming with sea-lions.

Yes that was the best experience I have ever had, ever. And I literally got married this year.
